Normally I wouldn't have any beef with someone's fetish because, hey, it's private and I never have to know about it unless I decide to get into your pants.

But furries take their shit to the next level. Being a furry doesn't just mean that you're interested in fucking anthropomorphic animals here-- it's literally an identity. People openly identify as otherkin and equally ridiculous shit, even in non-sexual settings. The high school that I went to literally had to ban tails because they were getting too out of control. Imagine if everyone into BDSM wore a ball gag around their neck. Would that shit fly in public? Hell no.

I'd be perfectly okay with it if people weren't so fucking open about it.

Hm, interesting. I happen to end up with furries from time to time, that's why I was wondering what is so special about that sub culture that people literally have hate-websites about them. I myself am more active in the goth scene and while there sure are some who don't like goths, there is tolerance mostly everywhere.

Maybe having a tail and wearing black clothes is just too different to compare, but I still became curious because of that unequal treatment, especially in the USA.

It's also because of the sexualization of animals moreso than the clothing, maybe.

Also remember that America is still an extremely Christian nation, and oldschool Christian ideals mean that someone should only be attracted to a human of the opposite sex. While America is becoming more liberal because of the fact that the new generations are far more connected to the rest of the world (we were extremely isolated culturally as per American foreign policy during the Cold War era, particularly when compared to European nations that are geographically connected) due to the Internet, and thus becoming more accepting of different sexualities, the vast majority of Americans have been raised according to these heteronormative Christian values which makes us unconsciously discriminatory.

My opinion:
You can be transgender.
You can be a furry.
You can be an otherkin.
You can be gay.
You can be pansexual.

You cannot be a transgender furry. They have conflicting definitions, and if ANYONE claims to be a pansexual transgender gay furry (or something similar) they instantly become a fucking poser, and I wish I could slap anyone who thinks that.

Just for clarification Tehr, since I feel like you don't really get what furry is about - it is merely being a fan of anthropomorphic animal characters, like being a brony is about being a fan of MLP:FiM. So being transgender and furry is not at all conflicting.

Being furry is not being an otherkin. It's also not a fetish (though that's a widespread thing in the fandom, because obviously, if you like anthros, you are nearly bound to like anthro porn). It's just about being a big fan of those characters in media.

Being a furry can mean a lot of shit. I'm sure that what you just said is what constitutes a furry in your mind, but that may not be the case for others. While I have no doubt that many, if not most, furries are as you described, there are some that are like this picture, and as that was the initial spark for this discussion, I am still discussing in line with this extremely confused individual; in this case, when I say transgender furry, I mean therian furry. But going along with what Critikill said, all psychological conditions should be viewed on a spectrum (as we have been moving towards collectively with the changes in the DSM-V from the DSM-IV). Someone with, for example, major depression can be someone who can't even leave their room unless someone makes them, or they can be someone who has just been feeling kind of sad for a while.

My point is that some definitions of furry - any of those that involve a "fursona" or identifying as an animal - CANNOT logically coexist with the term transgender. Transgender is gender dysphoria, and the aforementioned definitions of furry are species dysphoria, two conflicting terms. You CANNOT be bigender, transgender, and a therian furry. It is not fucking possible unless you're making shit up.

I consider myself an accepting person, but honestly, FUCK anyone who applies tags to themselves in an effort to feel special, or whatever the fuck that shitbag is doing. People out there legitimately have gender dysphoria and other simimlar psychological conditions and disorders, and anyone who abuses such terms is a fucking asshole.

However, my answer still applies. You should bear in mind the fact that America is not the most intolerant of furries (especially compared to some European countries), and it may only seem that way because 1) the prevalence rate of furries is higher in America, 2) America has a population of 325,000,000 and Europe (UN estimate minus transcontinental countries like Turkey and Russia) has a population of 365,000,000, and 3) a lot of the shit that happens on the internet is blamed on America because many of the sites that it happens on are based in America.

Totally agree. I feel the same way about people who do anything to be a super special snowflake (or feel that way).

And this is where I don't follow. I mean, being a different species AND a different gender works, doesn't it? If I'm a male human but I feel like a female wolf - I don't see how that is impossible? Purely hypothetical.
Also having a Fursona has nothing to do with dysphoria - it's simply your anthro version. Like... I dunno man, a super-hero version of you, a jedi-version of you etc. - it's nothing people are usually serious about.

Species dysphoria is more a thing of otherkin and therian communities - furries have people from there more commonly, but it doesn't define furry. And there the fursona often becomes something very serious to the people - but again, that doesn't really define what it is.

Either way - I see where the hate is coming from and I understand it rather well too now. The things that upset people (trying to be a super special snowflake, dragging their personal likes into public, etc.) piss me off too. Sadly that's the minority of furries, but the majority of surface that is exposed to the outside. Oh dear, makes me remember the time they were still focusing on bestiality.

Something bad that you can really hate about furries is that they are nearly always handicapped in a social way. It's like a prerequisite for becoming one. Not necessarily, but kind of.
